North Reach 2026: the freeride kite that does everything well

North Reach 2026 in action, freeride kitesurf kite

Some kites work well in one type of wind. Others work well with one style of rider. The North Reach 2026 doesn't do those restrictions. It arrives with specific improvements on an already solid base: a slimmer leading edge, a canopy with better airflow management and a redesigned bridle that changes how it feels in your hands. This isn't marketing — it's what you notice on the water in the first ten minutes.

What has really changed

The most relevant change on the Reach 2026 is the leading edge profile. North has moved to N-Max2, a slimmer leading edge structure than in previous generations. A slimmer leading edge isn't just about weight — it directly changes how the kite moves through the wind window. The response to bar input is more immediate, the turn is livelier and the overall feel in your hands is more agile. If you're coming from a three-strut kite from a few years ago, you'll notice this from the very first minute of flying.

The canopy combines N-RS3 fabric with N-HTRS (High Tenacity Ripstop) reinforcements, a material with low stretch and high tear resistance. In practice this means the kite keeps its geometry and profile after many hours of use — something that makes a difference if you get on the water regularly. Kites that lose their shape over time are the ones that start causing instability problems, especially in gusts. The Reach 2026 is built so that doesn't happen, and you can tell from the finish.

The 3-strut configuration rather than 5-strut designs is a decision North sticks with for good reason. Less structural stiffness means more natural movement in the canopy, smoother yet faster turning and, in terms of overall weight, a kite that doesn't tire you out. Combined with the more swept (swept) design and a slightly higher aspect ratio than previous versions, the Reach 2026 has a bigger wind range than it appears. The 13m and 15m sizes in particular are machines for light-wind days.

The bridle system has also been revised: more attachment points for structural reinforcement and a tuned geometry that delivers quicker, more direct depower. When you need to dump power in a gust, you don't want to think — you want it to happen. The Reach does it, with a consistency that builds confidence session after session. The new canopy profile also allows cleaner airflow, which translates into smoother transitions and greater overall stability in the wind window.

Who is it for?

If you came into the shop and asked us who this kite is for, I'd put it like this: it's for the rider who wants to get on the water in any conditions and enjoy it without overcomplicating things. That's not saying it's a "basic" kite — it's saying it has a real, clear range of use, not a made-up one. The Reach 2026 suits someone who has been on the water for a while, enjoys freeride, likes to throw the odd big jump or catch some waves now and then, but isn't in competition mode.

It's also a perfect kite for those making the transition from more school-type gear to something with more character. The smooth depower and dynamic relaunch mean handling mistakes don't turn into serious problems. The big sizes — 13m, 15m, up to 17m — are especially interesting for riders who want to make the most of light-wind days, when other kites simply don't behave well. Cohan Van Dijk summed it up well: “You fly the Reach for 10 minutes at the start of a session, and you already know it's going to be a good session."

Who it's not the best option for: if you're after maximum height in big air, there are kites with geometries more specific to that. If you want maximum performance in waves with pure surf-style, there are other options in North's range with a more specialised response. But for 90% of sessions for 90% of riders, the Reach is honest about what it offers — and that's hugely valuable. A note on construction: North is a brand that takes care over materials and you can feel it. The N-Max2 leading edge, although slimmer, doesn't compromise durability — it's designed precisely for that.

Rider with the North Reach 2026 freeride kitesurfing

At PopKite

The first thing we do when someone talks to us about a new kite is understand how they ride: their current level, their weight, what kind of wind they usually get where they ride, whether they prioritise jumping, waves or just having fun. With the North Reach 2026 that process is simpler than with almost any other kite, because its range of use is genuinely broad. But that doesn't mean all sizes are the same for everyone: a 70kg rider in light wind has a very different conversation from a 95kg rider in strong, variable wind. That's where our judgement comes in.

One of the things that sets the way we work apart is that we can put the kite on the water before you buy it. Not in a simulator, not by watching a video — on the water, with wind, with your bar in your hands. That tells you more in twenty minutes than any spec sheet. With the Reach 2026 this is especially relevant: it's a kite that wins you over when you fly it, and there are sensations that can't be put into words. The lightness of the N-Max2 in motion, the immediate depower, the way it relaunches by itself if you make a mistake — those things can only be learned by trying it.

If you've been wondering for a while whether it's time to step up to a kite of this level, or you're torn between sizes, or you simply want to be sure the Reach is the kite that best suits your riding style — that's exactly the kind of conversation we like to have. We have test gear available and a team that knows it on the water, not just on paper. Because some things can't be explained: they have to be tried.
