Description
The mast for flying with a motor without noticing it
Sonar ultra-high-modulus (UHM) carbon mast with the Foil Drive motor pod integrated 18 cm from the base. It is 25 % thinner and has a 14 % shorter chord than the AF80 FD mast: it creates almost no drag, accelerates sooner until you get up on the foil and glides better once up, with minimal battery consumption. The mast is sold alone, without a motor.
80 cm · Thickness 13.5 mm · Chord 108 mm · Foil Drive V2 motor (sold separately)
Who it's for
- Riders with a Foil Drive system (or planning to fit one) who want the most efficient set-up for assisted foiling.
- Prone foil surfers who use the assist to catch waves and want more sessions from each battery.
- Downwind riders looking to take off effortlessly and glide with minimal drag.
- Anyone who already has a Foil Drive motor with a V2 connector and detachable cable and wants to move to a carbon mast thinner than the AF80 FD.
What makes it special
01 Ultra-low drag
Designed for riding with electric assist with minimal battery consumption.
02 Strong, light monocoque mast
One-piece construction for maximum hydrodynamic efficiency.
03 Motor pod 18 cm from the base
The ideal compromise between a well-submerged propeller for the assist and enough clearance when you are up on the foil.
04 Pre-installed Foil Drive connector
It comes fitted in the pod with the wiring integrated inside the mast.
05 Extreme torsional and bending stiffness
Direct transfer of the power from your legs to the wing.
06 80 cm long
A ride height that performs in every assisted foil discipline.
07 108 mm chord
More manoeuvrability for faster turning.
08 13.5 mm thick
25 % thinner than AF80 FD masts.
09 Less drag, more range
Because it creates less drag, the battery lasts longer on the water.
10 Faster acceleration
You get up on the foil sooner and with less assist.
11 More glide
Better glide and more efficient pumping once up.
12 GeoLock
Tapered geometry lock system between mast and fuselage for a connection that spreads the load better.
13 Recommended with Sonar Pro carbon fuselage
North recommends it with its Pro-range carbon fuselage.
14 Compatible with Foil Drive V2 motors
It works with the V2 High Power motor and the V2 Standard.
Where it shines: assisted prone surf foiling, wake foiling, assisted downwind and flat water for learning to fly with a motor.
Technical data
| SIZE | LENGTH | THICKNESS | CHORD | MOTOR | MATERIAL |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UHM80 FD | 80 cm | 13.5 mm | 108 mm | Pod 18 cm from the base | High-modulus pre-preg carbon |
Data from North's official spec sheet; North does not publish the weight of this mast. It includes only the integrated mast compatible with the Foil Drive V2 motor: the motor and the Foil Drive kit (battery and remote) are sold separately. The pod is fixed and cannot be removed or repositioned. Check availability in store in the selector.

North and Foil Drive, in a single mast
North has teamed up with Foil Drive, the creators of electric assist for foiling, to integrate their technology into the Sonar UHM80 and AF80 masts: less drag, better feel and more efficiency. The wiring runs inside the mast and connects to the Foil Drive kit, which mounts on the board's track and includes the remote control. The front wing, fuselage and stabilizer are North's Sonar parts.
Technology and construction
- High-modulus pre-preg carbon (UHM): North's stiffest, thinnest carbon construction for a mast with minimal drag.
- Monocoque design: one-piece mast, strong and light, with the motor pod faired into the profile.
- GeoLock: tapered geometry lock: the bolts tighten the mast against the fuselage and the load is spread across the whole profile section.
- Internal wiring: it connects the pod to the Foil Drive system (sold separately) with no external cables.
- Foil Drive V2 compatibility: it works with the V2 Standard and V2 High Power motors; North recommends the Integrated Mast High Power Motor set (stator, motor, 3-blade propeller and propeller cap).
- What's included: 1 Foil Drive integrated mast compatible with the V2 motor (motor not included).
Which one to choose?
- Sonar UHM Carbon Mast 2027 (UHM73): the same UHM carbon without a motor, in 73 cm and with the shortest chord in the range (100 mm), for prone surf foiling, pumping and downwind without assist.
- Sonar UHM Foil Mast 2027: the UHM range without a motor in five lengths (UHM73 to UHM105) for wingfoiling, surf foiling and racing.
- Sonar CF Foil Mast 2027: standard pre-preg carbon mast (CF72 and CF85), without a motor; more affordable than the UHM.
- Sonar AF Foil Mast 2027: aluminium mast without a motor, the toughest against knocks and high loads.
Pair it with: Sonar Fuselage+ 2027, Sonar Carbon Fuselage, Sonar SF830 or Sonar SF930 wings or the Sonar SF v2+ 2027 wing, Sonar S185 and Sonar S215 stabilizers, the North Boost board and the carbon mast cover.
Frequently asked questions
Does it include the motor?+
No. It is just the mast with the pod and wiring integrated. You need a Foil Drive V2 motor (Standard or High Power) and the complete Foil Drive kit (battery and remote), which are bought separately from a Foil Drive dealer.
Will my current Foil Drive motor work?+
If your motor has a V2 connector with a detachable cable, yes: the mast is compatible with the V2 Standard and V2 High Power motors. North recommends the Integrated Mast High Power Motor set.
Which wing and stabilizer should I fit?+
According to North's recommended set-ups for assisted prone surfing at beginner level, with a C650 fuselage: SF830 with S185 below 70 kg, SF930 with S185 between 70 and 85 kg, and SF1080 with S215 above 85 kg. For intermediate and advanced assisted downwind it suggests DW wings with S122 or S142 stabilizers.
Can the motor pod be moved?+
No. The pod is fixed 18 cm from the base of the mast, the height North considers ideal for the propeller to work submerged without getting in the way when you are up on the foil.
Is it compatible with my Sonar parts?+
Yes. It has the GeoLock connection used on all Sonar masts, so it works with Sonar fuselages, wings and stabilizers. If you want to understand better how each part works, read what a hydrofoil is and how it works.
