Description
Flat, loose and fast
Flat, loose and even faster, the S178 is a high-speed upgrade for the Sonar system designed for experienced riders. North recommends pairing it with HA950 or smaller front wings. It has a higher aspect ratio than the S208, with less drag, and its flatter shape seen from the front gives it more manoeuvrability. Like all North stabilizers, it is mounted on top of the fuselage, out of the front wing's turbulence, for a smoother ride.
Area 180 cm² · Span 380 mm · Aspect ratio 8.1 · Pre-preg carbon
Who it's for
- Experienced riders who want more speed.
- Anyone riding HA950 or smaller front wings.
What makes it special
01 Top-mounted
It breaches first and warns you before the front wing ventilates.
02 Pre-preg carbon
Optimal stiffness and direct response.
03 Thin profile
Less drag.

Which one to choose?
- Sonar S158v2 (158 cm²): smaller, needs less front-foot pressure.
- Sonar S185 (185 cm²): bigger, needs more front-foot pressure.
Pair it with: HA950 front wing, HA850 front wing, HA750 front wing, Sonar carbon fuselage and spare screw pack C.
Frequently asked questions
Which front wings should I pair it with?+
North recommends it with HA950 or smaller front wings.
What changes with a bigger or smaller stabilizer?+
According to North, the stabilizer creates a downward force that stops the front wing from nosediving: a bigger one needs more front-foot pressure, and a smaller one, less.
Which screws does it use?+
It comes with screw pack C (M8 x 16). North recommends applying marine grease to the screws every time you assemble it.
Is it compatible with my foil?+
Yes, if you have North's Sonar system: it fits all their aluminium and carbon fuselages.
